Network Security: protect against email viruses
Aug 22, 2007 - RISING
Email viruses are just like other computer viruses except that they spread via email, especially through the attachment in an email. As email has been used frequently in our work and life, protection against email viruses is critical for computer security.

1. Select the reliable antivirus software. The antivirus software must be able to scan both incoming emails and out coming emails.

2. Update the antivirus regularly. New viruses never end and never stop. Antivirus vendors update their virus base regularly. If the user does not update his/her antivirus in time, the antivirus software will not be able to protect against the latest viruses and threats.

3. Do not easily open and trust emails from strangers. If an email has no content, no attachments but it is more than 10K in size, this email probably contains virus. If the attachment is executable file such .exe or .com file or Word document, scan the attachment with your antivirus before you open it or run it. If the domain or the address of the sender is very strange to you, maybe you already received a virus email. If the email or the attachment has double postfix, it could be virus. Normally the virus hides in the attachments of an email, so you can just delete them directly.

4. Try not to set up contact list at the outlook 'Address Book' because once get infected, the virus will spread through the contact list in the 'Address Book'.

5. Set up the auto-filter function of your email box. Not only spam can be filtered, but also some virus emails.

6. Do not use the HTML preview function of your email application. Some destructive viruses infect the computer through preview and do not necessarily require opening the email.
