System security: optimize your IE
Sep 05, 2007 - RISING
1. Temporary Internet Files

When you are browsing websites, IE will automatically save all the information of pictures, images, flashes and Cookies into C:\Documents and Settings\[YOU USER NAME]\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\. The advantage is next time when you need to come back to the web page, IE can retrieve these files from your local hard disk and speed up your browsing. However, as time goes by, you will find the size of the temporary file folder becomes bigger and bigger. This can easily produce hard disk fragment, which will affect the system performance. Therefore, we can change the location/path of Temporary Internet Files. This can reduce the load of the system and if one day we must restore the system, we can restore these temporary internet files too.

Open your IE(IE 7), click 'Tools' - 'Internet Options' - 'General' - 'Browsing history settings' - 'Move folder' and then move the folder to a different partition.

2. History

IE will record all the websites you visited. The feature can help you remember which websites you had ever been browsing. However, you probably don't want others to check what websites you had visited with your computer, especially in your company.

Open your IE(IE 7), click 'Tools' - 'Internet Options' - 'General' - 'Browsing history settings' - 'History' and change the value of 'Days to keep pages in history'.

3. Content Limitation

Internet is a world. This world is just like the real world we are living in. You can find wonderful and beautiful things from internet. You can also get rubbish. It doesn't matter if all of a sudden, you want to visit some sexual websites some day. The problem is, however, some websites contain malicious codes and scripts. Once you visit them once, your computer will get problems. Maybe your default home page had been changed. Maybe your computer always pops up some advertising windows. Maybe your system had been slowed down. You probably want to set some limitations to the websites you and your children can visit.

Open your IE (IE 7), click 'Tools' - 'Internet Options' - 'Content' - 'Content Advisor', and then click 'Enable'. Now you can adjust the slider to specify what users are allowed to see.
